At New Orleans by the Bay, the Rev. Al Green won't be the only participant worthy of the pulpit. On Friday night, Green will be joined by a double shot of gospel legend: the Mighty Clouds of Joy and recent NEA Lifetime Achievement award winners the Five Blind Boys From Alabama. These two acts should handily generate the infectious energy of the Gospel Tent that longtime Jazz Fest visitors have come to crave. Lest the calls for salvation get heavy-handed, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band will be prepared to blow some second-line syncopation.
Saturday's show features two members of bayou royalty, zydeco accordionists Boozoo Chavis and Buckwheat Zydeco, as well as John Mooney, a superb blues-guitar traditionalist who's a favorite of Keith Richards. On both Saturday and Sunday, look for the Rebirth Brass Band, New Orleans' funky, twentysomething answer to the Dirty Dozen. Also scheduled for both days is S.F. cafe act Bo Grumpus; Craig Ventresco, guitarist for this old-timey trio, recently contributed extensively to the Crumb soundtrack on Rykodisc.
Al Green plays Fri, June 16, at the New Orleans by the Bay festival (June 16-18) at the Shoreline Amphitheatre; call (510) 762-
