Chatterbox

SF Weekly's Smart Feller, which frequently salutes Lloyd's Bar at Seventh Street and Mission for its $1.50 beer-and-a-shot combination (it's a 6-ounce beer), should check out the Four Leaf Clover at 30th and Mission, which matches the offer during happy hour. Is the Tonga Room listening? ... Remember Roberta Achtenberg's stirring campaign slogan "She'll Never Sell Us Out," that veiled but obvious attack on the wheeler-dealering of Willie Brown? What name, then, should we give to her extravagant endorsement of Brown and appearance in his campaign literature? "I stand with Willie Brown and ask you to join me in standing with him," she writes in the most recent Brown campaign flier. ... Longtime San Francisco libertarian activist turned Pat Buchanan-shilling paleocon Justin Raimundo is hella pissed that all 11 members of the Board of Supervisors have turned down his request to condemn the U.S.'s Bosnia peace-keeping mission. He says the libs on the board, known for their willingness to comment on foreign policy (who could ever forget the stink over the Gulf War resolution?), are too scared to criticize their man Bill in the White House. Undeterred by the distinction between a war and a mission to enforce a negotiated peace, Raimundo says the liberal supes have lost their pacifist ways in favor of political expediency. ... No sooner did the boys at Suck start slopping up the HotWired gravy than did a gang of parodists shout, "Sell out!" and serve them a mound of lumpy mashed potatoes. Trafficking their satire under the Web moniker Blow (www.naples.net/~nfn03457/blow.html), the parodists write, "[A]bout the middle of January, our collective memory of Suck's craven act of betrayal will fade: almost certainly replaced by a more recent cause celebre. Between now and then, I'm sure most of us will continue to read Suck every day. And no difference in quality between the pre- and post-HotWired periods will go a long way in helping us forget. Then, one fine spring day, it will be as if none of this ever happened.
