The Supes List

Fifty-seven potential candidates, 14 active candidates, and rising ...
Deep Tout, a San Francisco political devotee who craves publicity and anonymity in equal portions, maintains a frequently updated short list of sure things, long shots, and wannabe candidates for the Board of Supervisors.

Tout's latest handicap of the field notes that three incumbent supes will be up for re-election in November 1996: Sue Bierman, Barbara Kaufman, and whomever Mayor-elect Willie Brown appoints to fill DA-elect Terence Hallinan's seat. Three other supervisors will lose their seats owing to term limitations -- Angela Alioto, Tom Hsieh, and Willie Kennedy -- meaning that at least six total seats will be up for grabs.

A boldface name on this list indicates that the individual has solicited endorsements, has attempted to raise funds, or has confirmed that he or she is running. Tout makes no claim that the others listed herein are running, that those not on the list are not running, or even that any name contained herein is spelled correctly. All that is certain is that somebody in town is floating their candidacies.

Tout, who can be reached via SF Weekly's fax number (415/777-1839) or e-mail address (, offers to remove the name of anyone who denies he is running. Others may confirm that they are running, and will see their name listed in bold type in a future installment of the Supes List.

  • Phish at the Bill Graham Auditorium
Phish is in the midst of a block of sold out shows at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium (October 27-29). The Monday night concert featured a rare first set opener of “Walfredo” with the band members switching instruments for the song. The evening’s highlights included John Fishman and his iconic vacuum cleaner solo and favorites such as Chalk Dust Torture, Slave to the Traffic Light, Axilla, Rift, 2001 Space Odyssey, and Maze. The show also featured Phish’s debut of a, seemingly impromptu, version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” to with roaring approval of the, singing along, crowd. With Game 6 being tonight, partying Phish fans will join Giants fans in Civic Center Plaza where there will be a World Series viewing party on a large screen set up by the City.
