And it suddenly seems obvious that the quail, like this landscape, have been prisoners of history: of extinction, Colonial aggression, wars, internment, boom, bust, a faltering economy, an Army base closed, a privatization frenzy begun. Humans have messed with the Presidio for a long, long time. Change probably was inevitable.

Which leaves two remaining questions.
