The Look of Love In the seminal 1975 essay "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema," Laura Mulvey analyzes the approach of Josef von Sternberg and other auteurs as examples of "the male gaze." "Visual Pleasure" has been criticized in recent years -- especially now that mass media encourages an active female gaze -- but both Mulvey (in nonlinear films like Riddles of the Sphinx) and feminist filmmakers continue to use its ideas in a quest for new ways of making and viewing film.
