New Editor at SF Weekly

Dirk Olin has been appointed editor of SF Weekly effective June 10. He replaces Jack Shafer, who resigned last month to accept the deputy editor position at Slate, a new on-line magazine.

Olin joins SF Weekly from California Lawyer, where he is the editor. Previously, Olin worked as editor of California Lawyer's sister publication, the San Francisco Daily Journal. In 1991 and 1992, he served as publisher and editor of California Republic, a political journal.

Prior to moving to San Francisco in 1989, Olin worked in Washington, D.C., contributing to many publications, including the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the New Republic, the Chicago Tribune, and Outside magazine.

"I think SF Weekly has made great strides in the last year toward becoming the tough, clever paper that this town really needs," says Olin. "A lot of journalism in San Francisco is just cant and rant, with editors pursuing this or that agenda based on symbology rather than the effects on real folks. Our goal is to create a publication as smart and skeptical as its readers
