Women's Work Local filmmaker Nancy Kates' student thesis got a better-than-average reception: It won an Oscar. Her short film Their Own Vietnam, a chronicle of women's experiences as soldiers and medical personnel in the Vietnam War, won the 1995 Student Academy Award in Documentary for its juxtaposition of rare archival footage and home movies with the 1993 dedication of the D.C. Vietnam Women's Memorial and interviews with five veterans. The film screens at 2:15 and 7 p.m. with the feature documentary War Stories Our Mothers Never Told Us at UC Theater, 2036 University, Berkeley. Admission is $4-6.50; call (510) 843-0847.

Hot Tip Before she became known as the music warning label lady and President Clinton's mental health adviser, second lady Tipper Gore worked in the private sector as a photojournalist for the Tennessean and had her work published in Newsweek. Gore is on the lecture circuit to discuss her book Picture This: A Visual Diary, a chronicle of her life as a vice president's wife. Because Gore also serves as a special adviser to the Interagency Council on the Homeless, proceeds from her appearance will benefit Community Housing Partnership, a nonprofit service agency for the homeless. Political consultant Scott Shafer interviews Gore onstage at 8 p.m. in the Herbst Theater, 401 Van Ness, S.F. Admission is $16; call 392-4400.
