This unwavering commitment to innovation contributes to the quartet's long-standing reputation among an international contingent of jazz and new-music heavies. It also ensures legitimate interest from respected record labels that are currently issuing new Rova and extra-Rova projects at an extraordinary rate. Italy's Black Saint has released Ochs' The Secret Magritte and Rova's The Works, Vol. I (with a second volume to follow), a collection of Rova interpretations of specially penned pieces by composers like Jack DeJohnette and John Carter; Canada's Victo label issued Ptow!!; the imminent Morphological Echoes will come out on the Bay Area's Rastascan Records; L.A.'s Nine Winds has released In Out Side, Steve Adams' duo collaboration with Ken Filiano; and the most celebrated extra-Rova project, the Lisle Ellis-led What We Live, with Larry Ochs and Donald Robinson, has two new discs out: the self-titled debut on Japan's DIW, and the phenomenal What We Live Fo(u)r (Black Saint), where the trio expands with rotating fourth members on each track. This spate of activity from Ackley, Adams, Ochs, and Raskin, which shows no sign of diminishing, corroborates Ochs' assertion that "this type of music -- whatever its name -- is here to stay."
What We Live and Steve Adams/Ken Filiano 4tet play Wednesday, Aug. 28, and the Rova Saxophone Quartet plays Friday, Aug. 30, at Venue Nine, 252 Ninth St.; call 626-2169 for more info.
