Remote Control Because parents can't or don't always monitor what TV shows their kids watch, and because the jury's out on ratings systems and V-chips, kids are still being exposed to a barrage of violent images on the tube -- as many as 8,000 murders by the time they're 12, by some estimates. And though many industry representatives and adult Looney Tunes fans will argue that TV violence has no demonstrably negative effect on its young viewers, children's advocates and educators tend to disagree. The Smart Parent's Guide to TV Violence, a one-hour special taped before a live KQED studio audience, navigates its way through conflicting opinions, integrating panel discussions on violent behavior and anxiety among TV-viewing youngsters with video clips and recent findings by the National Television Violence Study. The show airs at 9 p.m. on KQED Channel 9.

Not Just Plain Folk Texas is home to any number of practitioners of the lonely strains of country, blues, and gospel, but few have the force and stature of Jimmie Dale Gilmore. The statuesque singer/songwriter has a fluty, archaic yodel of a voice and a penchant for combining modern themes of alienation with antique song construction; on his latest, Braver New World, however, he reaches for a more produced, full band sound. Roots rock pioneer Alejandro Escovedo, a friend of Gilmore's from Austin, a former member of Rank and File and the Nuns, and a member of the musical family that includes Pete and Sheila E., opens for Gilmore at 8 p.m. at Bimbo's 365 Club, 1025 Columbus, S.F.
