Tish Hinojosa/Flaco Jimenez/Dr. Loco and His Rockin' Jalapeno Band
Texas Chicanos first heard accordions through German and Czech immigrant neighbors, who played polkas and schottisches. Intrigued by the funky squeeze-boxes, they learned the forms and instrumentation; the results evolved into Tex-Mex or Tejano. This week, three of the genre's most progressive and influential voices gather for a Tex-Mex fiesta in the comfortable confines of Maritime Hall. Bay Area fave Dr. Loco opens with a mix of polkasized banda bombers and authentic Afro-Caribbean rhythms. San Antonio legend Flaco Jimenez (who scored a Grammy last year for Seguro Que Hell Yes!) will also be on hand, featuring the legendary 12-string bajo sexteto guitar player Oscar Tellez with the conjunto/group. Austin-based singer/songwriter Tish Hinojosa, whose beautiful, Joan Baez-influenced voice has garnered wide acclaim in recent years, balances out the lineup. Accompanied by her trio, she's currently touring for her latest, Dreaming From the Labyrinth. It's a wow of a bill for Tejano and Americana music fans. (Jesse "Chuy" Varela)

Tish Hinojosa, Flaco Jimenez, and Dr. Loco and His Rockin' Jalapeno Band play Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. at Maritime Hall, 450 Harrison. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door; call 974-0634.
