Although we knew that prosecution would be highly unlikely, we wanted the police to be aware of the incident. I hope Stark's article will discourage other would-be passengers from thinking that hailing limos is a good alternative to cabs. I was very thankful that my friend made it home alive.
Ashes to Ashes
Re "Buttheads" by Jack Boulware (Dec. 25), I'd just like to offer a challenge to all of those tired, unimaginative frat boys and sorority chicks whose trendmongering poses as members of the oh-so-in-your-face anti-"PC" vanguard depend on defining themselves by becoming tobacco neo-"aficionados." Show us some real commitment by smoking and, most critically, inhaling the smoke from any cigarette, from GPC to Dunhill, it doesn't matter. There are many of us who would get a kick (no pun) watching you all turn blue and heave your foie gras and single malt into your cell phones. Put your money where your lungs are you wimps. See you in the cancer ward.
Eric Peterson (a cigarette smoker)
With reference to "The Grid" ("Pin in the Ass," Dec. 25) and Mission activist Andy Solow: Andy tenaciously champions Mission soccer and other issues. That is great. But with the current federally funded housing development at 1010 South Van Ness for persons with HIV/AIDS, Andy has been destructive in his opposition by attacking the project's supporters personally. I will always look for the good in Andy's passion, but I'll be honest when it crosses the line.

Ooh, That Double Vision
Re the review of the Second Sight CD (Recordings, Dec. 11): "[T]he Dead ... dallied in shameless capitalism from the outset." Gee, I guess reviewer Sam Prestianni never went to a Stones concert. At the "Steel Wheels" tour, there was (not cheap) Stones tour merchandise left and right (and let's not forget about the corporate sponsorship). And I suppose tickets to Lollawhatsis cost the same as, say, tickets to a Fugazi show. Further, I think I read that the whiner from Smashing Pumpkins gives 50 percent of his earnings to charities and/or the Socialist Workers Party. (So does Madonna, I think.)
If you want to slag the Dead, fine, but keep it on a musical basis. Don't single them out for doing what nearly every other band does (or would do if given the chance no matter what they say in interviews about money and/or success not being "important" to them).
Too Long Too Temp
Belated salute to you for the article regarding temping ("Temporary Solidarity," Dec. 4). I am a writer and frequently a temp in the city. The experience is often demoralizing and always underpaid. Even reputedly liberal companies abuse their vast pool of temps by dangling the prospect of working for them full time while the temps suspend their careers and lives. Nothing since the advent of pimps even resembles the flesh brokers who send people out on "assignments" for cash. I hope to see more such stories.
