Tijuana No, Psychosomatic, Lodo y Asfalto
Since its emergence in the early '80s, Spanish-language rock 'n' roll has fought its way from the streets of Mexico, Latin America, and Spain onto the pop charts. While bands like Mana and Cafe Tacuba represent a more palatable and easily accepted version, an alternative scene has emerged that serves a much harder-edged and more politically motivated music. Tijuana No, led by singer/songwriter Luis Guerena, is at the forefront of this movement. Their latest album, Transgresores de la Ley ("Outlaws") is dedicated to the Zapatista struggle in Chiapas, Mexico, and is being described as "rebel rock." Their forthcoming album is set to be recorded in Los Angeles and will feature Zack de la Rocha of Rage Against the Machine. This performance opens up Studio 435, the city's first rock dance hall catering to rockeros. So get ready to slam, scream, and yell, "AViva Zapata!"
