Hot Licks

The strip around 850 Bryant, shadowed by the looming Hall of Justice, isn't exactly a happening scene, unless your idea of happening involves getting tossed in the drunk tank on a Saturday night or pleading your case to a surly bail bondsman under the harsh glare of fluorescent lights. But there's actually more to the neighborhood: Annie's Cocktail Lounge, for example, where the main draw used to be karaoke Tuesdays, until this week's performance by Candye Kane. A one-time Gong Show contestant and teen-age mother, Kane turned to topless dancing to pay the bills but returned to her musical roots in 1994 with her jump-swing debut album Home Cookin', produced by the Paladins and followed by Knockout and Diva La Grande. The Blasters' Dave Alvin produced the latter, which features 14 originals and a Cajun version of Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'." Big Sandy & the Fly Rite Boys and Danny Barnes of the Bad Livers contributed to Diva, a collection of rockabilly and bluesy numbers enlivened by Kane's theatrical performance and the occasional lyrical double entendre. Kane will be accompanied by pianist Sue "Beehive" Palmer, who's been known to tickle the ivories with her prodigious bosom. The show begins at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Annie's Cocktail Lounge, 15 Boardman (at Bryant), S.F. Admission is $3; call 703-0865. (
