Hometown thieves we'll tolerate, but not southern sexists

Significantly, in some ways the new BofA is doing a better job than the old one at letting women ascend to the highest rung of the ladder -- its board of directors.

The new BofA has four women on its 19-member board, while the old BofA had just one. The old, 25-member NationsBank board had two women members.

On the other hand, Fortune magazine recently reported that at the old BofA there was a "dearth of people of color in senior management; they hold only 6.7 percent of the 25 highest-paid positions."

But these numbers weren't reported by the Chronicle and the Examiner.
And as members of San Francisco's establishment rat-packed the stupefied Charlottians, no one mentioned that BofA might be unfit for San Francisco's loyalty because it had been pillaging the city treasury for decades.

When asked why she was speaking out against BofA now when she had not previously criticized the bank, Supervisor Leslie Katz said that the bank's discrimination against women was "more insidious and intentional" than the bank's alleged theft of public funds.

Asked why she believes the new BofA is guilty of gender discrimination, Katz said she "only know[s] what I have been reading in the paper."

Supervisor Yaki differentiated between what he unabashedly -- and inaccurately -- called the "firing" of the woman and the embezzlement alleged in the lawsuit against BofA. Discrimination undermines "confidence in the institution," said Yaki. "The bank should be punished because women have asked us to take action, not because we think they didn't handle accounts correctly."

When Assemblyman Papan was asked what proof he has of BofA's discriminatory practices, he replied, "I have no proof except the San Francisco Chronicle report and their list of ladies that left.
