Want to Do It Yourself?

San Francisco's only ready sources of dry-aged prime beef are Bryant's Meats in Laurel Village (3473 California at Locust, 752-3430) and Harris' Restaurant, which has a small retail meat counter open during restaurant hours. Two supermarkets feature above-average beef, and sometimes obtain and age prime beef upon request, especially for major holidays: Andronico's (1200 Irving at Funston, 661-3220), and Enrico's Meats at Plaza Foods (Masonic and Fulton, 346-7934), which has a large, fully staffed meat counter. There is also one "branded" beef to look for: Niman Ranch sells naturally raised (hormone and pesticide free) meats, most with significantly finer flavor than supermarket-chain house brands.
