Hashing It Out
Harry was excited to hear that Gordon Drysdale, former chef with the Real Restaurants Group -- he's the one who started Bix oh so many moons ago -- is getting ready to open up on Potrero Hill. His House of Fine Eats will feature the California comfort food Drysdale does so well.

Full Speed Ahead
What a difference a chef makes: Elroy's down on Folsom stopped mid-nose dive, did a nice 180, and looks like it's ready to soar. Credit is due to Mark Valiani for looking beyond the ovens and creating a strong enough vision to keep this behemoth riding high in the water. Now Harry's gotta find another whipping boy.
A School for Scandal
Inexplicably, the anniversary of Patty Hearst's kidnapping passed without a parade. Though the Symbionese Liberation Army's tactics were, well, a bit unorthodox, Harry (of course) applauds the group's desire to see the masses fed. If you want to pay a pilgrimage, stop by Julie's Supper Club and gaze at the apartments above -- headquarters for the renegade group for almost five months. No, I don't think the SLA used to pop downstairs for margaritas and calamari -- Julie's hadn't opened yet.
Hee Haw
Congratulations to Lori Puccinelli for her promotion at Planet Hollywood. I can't wait for her 35th -- I mean 30th -- birthday hoedown this weekend. Harry's polishing his bolo tie as you read.
The Forest for the Trees
MUNI Hotel -- set to be run by Chip Conley's Joie de Vivre -- has hit a few snags. The proposed hotel struck Harry as a great use for an empty parking lot, but though the architects were at pains to take all the regulations -- like restrictions on building height and shadow-casting -- into account, there are more than a few complainers: It seems tenants of the neighboring Rincon Center Apartments aren't at all pleased that their views may be obstructed. Since when did renters in this town get any play? I rent. No one cares about my view. If you're going to live downtown, you've got to expect tall buildings around you.
Pokmon Pub
The Sixth Street corridor is on the upswing, and the latest addition is a video bar named POW! If you like manga and anime, this certainly sounds like the spot for you. And it seems the powers that be in the permitting department are gazing favorably on new nightspots in the area. Could this lead to more patrols and better street lighting?

Black Cat moves staff along faster than the new adoption center at the SPCA. The latest to be shown the cat door is GM Marco Wright. Things were going just fine until a disagreement surfaced at the monthly management meeting. Now, Harry doesn't think Wright was wrong, and the loyal staff doesn't think Wright was wrong. But two wrongs don't make a Wright, and the man in power said Wright was wrong. Don't worry, Marco, there's plenty of tasty kibble on down the road.
Take a Deep Breath
Harry's taking off to Sonoma for the week. We'll see if I can't dig up some Valley dirt in between aromatherapy sessions and wine tastings. Ciao for now.
