Oy, My Aching Funny Bone

With her autobiographical solo show June Bride, comedian/juggler Sara Felder struck just the right balance between humor and tenderness, art and entertainment, the personal and the universal. While juggling a few well-chosen props -- a crystal ball, a set of knives -- Felder fondly recounted the thrilling, terrifying business of falling in love, and the rocky road to planning a traditional Jewish lesbian wedding with family and friends (in typically dry fashion, she recalled a pivotal phone call to her mother: "The good news is, she's Jewish," Felder said of her intended. "The bad news is, she makes less money than I do."). Felder furthers the juggling Jewish lesbian comedy genre with Shtick!, a work-in-progress homage to Jewish vaudeville, in which she plots her course around two Jewish women living at opposite ends of the 20th century. As their lives converge, expect to hear "Hava Nagila" blaring from a boombox and see a Barbie doll cast re-enacting Sholom Asch's 1906 Yiddish drama God of Vengeance. The show, a last hurrah before Felder leaves us for Israel, opens at 8 p.m. Thursday (and runs through May 30) at A Traveling Jewish Theater, 470 Florida (at 17th Street), S.F. Admission is $20-25; call 399-1809.

And if that isn't enough to make a Jewish grandma smile (or maybe smack her forehead in exasperation), along comes "Feygelah Schmeygelah: An Evening of Queer Jewish Humor." "Dragapella beauty shop quartet" the Kinsey Sicks bring big hair and tuneful satire to the revue, in which they'll be joined by the all-women tap group Lynne Jassem's StepFire Tap Dance Theater (whose founder developed her taste for shtick at age 10, as a Como-ette on The Perry Como Show). Stand-up comedy circuit veteran Michele Balan and local comedian Lisa Geduldig (creator of the "Kung Pao Kosher Comedy" Christmas show) will also perform. The show, a benefit for the Holocaust Center of Northern California's Lesbians and the Holocaust Project, begins Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Herbst Theater, 401 Van Ness (at McAllister), S.F. Admission is $18-22; call 522-3737. (
