Two of SF Weekly's columnists have recently received second-place honors in national journalism contests.
Managing Editor Laurel Wellman won a second-place award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists for her weekly Dog Bites column.
Wellman placed in the Herb Caen Memorial Items Award category, one of five categories of honors given out by the NSNC in a competition open to daily and weekly newspapers from across the country. The winners were announced at the society's annual meeting in Louisville, Ky., on June 18.
Wellman was the only Bay Area newspaper columnist to place in this year's NSNC contest. Leah Garchik of the San Francisco Chronicle received an honorable mention, also in the Herb Caen category.
In its annual contest, the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies awarded second place for Column -- Political Commentary to SF Weekly's George Cothran. Cothran placed behind Wayne Barrett of the Village Voice in the category for large-circulation weekly newspapers.
