Even More Honors

Two SF Weekly writers have received honors in the California Newspaper Publishers Association's 1998 statewide journalism competition. The awards were announced June 26.

Peter Byrne won first place for investigative reporting among the state's largest weekly papers. Byrne was honored for "Rewarding Failure," a two-part series published in December 1998, which detailed how sloppy management and sweetheart union contracts have dragged down San Francisco's Muni mass transit system.

Staff writer Lisa Davis won the second-place award for feature writing, also in the large weeklies category. Davis was honored for her August 1998 story "The Fairfield Wives," chronicling the bizarre medical practices and allegations of sexual impropriety that cost a Fairfield physician his medical license.
