Revelry to the Rescue

"Epoch"

The ground isn't all that's shaky in San Francisco. Thanks to murky city politics and a misguided police force, our status as the West Coast's 24-hour city is a tenuous one. The Endup and Ten 15 Folsom have been under attack for much of this year, though the two clubs are central to S.F.'s nightlife. Clubbers have united to protest the threatened shutdowns -- and many have come together in a grass-roots troupe of DJs, promoters, patrons, and concerned citizens who call themselves the San Francisco Late Night Coalition (SFLNC). The SFLNC has been instrumental in raising public awareness about the situation with petitions, downtown rallies, and other protests.

And now, they're not alone. A second group, calling itself the After Hours Association (AHA), has arrived. Founded by Harris Rosenbloom, general manager of SF Metropolitanmagazine, the AHA shares the SFLNC's vision: saving nightlife. But the AHA plans to approach things in a slightly different manner. Says Trey Hromyak of Metropolitan, "If clubs don't do well, then other businesses suffer, too. We're coming from the idea that clubs benefit business, from the bartender to the security guy at the door to the advertising person to the media." The AHA has spent the last few months sorting out the red tape involved with obtaining permits and establishing itself as an official nonprofit.

The group's official launch, "Epoch," takes place on New Year's Eve. In partnership with Second Sunday Productions, Metropolitan, and others, the AHA has garnered groovy talent in the forms of DJ Mark Farina (known for his "mushroom jazz" and funky house style), jazz-infused funk courtesy of Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Latin funk and jazz from Resin, and various other bands and DJs for a soiree in the newly renovated Regency. Drinks are free (well, included in the ticket price anyway), and an array of appetizers will be available till the pumpkin comes 'round at midnight. Festivities commence Friday at 8 p.m. and continue through 6 a.m. at the Regency, 1300 Van Ness (at Sutter), S.F. Private rooms are also available. Tickets are $200; for more information call 339-7899.
