Best Homemade Gourmet Lunch in Hunters Point

The Outback Cafe

When developers break ground at the Hunters Point Shipyard, the Outback Cafe will finally begin to get the business it deserves. Until then, it will remain an oasis on the edge of an EPA Superfund site. The little cafe is truly one of the best-kept secrets in the neighborhood -- many people who have lived or worked in the area for years have never discovered it, which is all the better for the few who go there every day for lunch. The restaurant changes its specials daily, featuring a soup, a salad, two different sandwiches, and a pasta, in addition to its regular selection of burger and sandwich standards. Recently it's been offering soups such as small white bean or curried yellow squash. Salads have included feta, garbanzo beans, asparagus, and new potatoes. Sometimes the place will make simple comfort foods such as a creamy macaroni and cheese, or homemade ice cream sandwiches. Prices are decent as well, on sunny days staff put some tables out on the sidewalk, and, as a bonus, there's almost always a copy of the New York Times lying around inside.
