Best Place to Get a Haircut and Buy Pet Supplies

Garbo's

Granted, a hair salon that sells 25-pound bags of dog food on the side might not strike you as the best place to go for highlights or a cut. But Garbo's isn't your typical salon/pet supply store (the pet supply side of the shop is actually called Amore). Margarita Rodriguez, one of the two stylists, greets every customer with a big hug, then begins to talk about her day, her kids, the business, and maybe her family's last trip to Reno. An hour can fly by without the customer getting so much as a word in. Rodriguez's exuberance -- not to mention the boxes of kitty litter displayed in the window -- might hinder business if she and her partner, Steven York, weren't such truly great stylists. In fact, the duo has a near cultlike following, and has many clients who have been coming back for over a decade. The place keeps its prices low as well, charging $25 to $30 for a haircut, $55 and up for a color, and $65 and up for a permanent wave. Rodriguez just wants her customers to walk out the door satisfied with a fresh look -- and maybe a Milk-Bone for the pooch.
