Coffee Klatch
500 Columbus (at Stockton) will soon house an odd new hangout: Delluchi Cafe, an all-day, everyday affair that will be unique in that it is a spinoff ... of a sheet metal shop. It seems the guys at Delluchi Sheet Metal in North Beach, Dan Fenny and Richard Jones, wanted a place to cool off after a day of bending tin and cutting steel. They created it themselves as a 30-seat in, 20-seat out space with homemade breads and a 20-bottle wine list featuring rotating by-the-glass selections. Stop in and ask for Tracy. ... Meanwhile, Kate Dumbleton of Noir Records and all things jazzy has purchased -- with the help of some partners -- Cafe Royale. An existing business on the corner of Post and Leavenworth, the cafe is a multiuse space, with traditional coffee bar trappings plus a pool table, a wine-tasting bar, and a wraparound mezzanine for voyeurs and romantics.

Curtain Going Up
Everyone in the biz is talking about Fully Committed, the one-man show starring Ethan Sandler at the Theater on the Square. Harry's going to see it again and wants you all to join him for a fun night. Tuesday the 18th is the date for the unofficial Side Dish field trip to the theater. Get your tickets now.

Time for a Diet?
Hello, fellow Americans. Harry hopes you had a gluttonous Fourth in true patriotic style. The numbers from last year's celebration are just in (better late than never) and I sure hope we broke some records yesterday. On Independence Day 1999, only 53,600,000 pounds of beef were thrown on the barbecue. For those who preferred one-handed dining, 150 million hot dogs found their way between the buns. Which raises another long-standing mystery -- why do dogs come in eight-packs, yet buns are bagged in groups of six?

Fan Appreciation Day
Willie Mays celebrated his birthday with family and friends at his numbersake Restaurant 24 in Pac Bell Park. Baseball fans were practically lined up to talk to the Giants great as he ate. When the management offered to keep the adorers at bay, the slugger refused. Give the people what they want, Willie.

Leftovers
Mick Jagger hosted a rehearsal dinner for his daughter Karis and her fiance Jonathan Watson on the veranda at Le Colonial before Karis' wedding last weekend. So that's why there was all that security. ... Joseph and Mary of Globe have opened their new manger in downtown Glen Ellen. Mucca is the name of this hot spot in a sleepy town of hip restaurants. ... My congrats to Joseph Graham, co-owner of Florio on Fillmore, for his marriage to the vivacious Cheryl.

  • Arcade Fire at Shoreline
Arcade Fire opened their US tour at Shoreline Amphitheater to a full house who was there in support of their album "Reflector," which was released last fall. Dan Deacon opened the show to a happily surprised early audience and got the crowd actively dancing and warmed up. DEVO was originally on the bill to support Arcade Fire but a kayak accident last week had sidelined lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh and the duration of the west coast leg of the tour. Win Butler did a homage to DEVO by performing Uncontrollable Urge.

Comic book enthusiasts, Cosplayers, TV and movie fans, and celebrities descended to sunny San Diego for the annual gathering at Comic-Con International.

Whether hitting up a panel to check out The Simpson's announcement of a cross over with Family Guy or Futurama. Or hearing a new movie with Sam Raimie based on a video game or accidentally rubbing shoulders with Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) in cosplay, being a cosplayer, San Diego Comic-Con is the place to be.
