Some of Our Best Friends Are Marina People

A recovering preppie: I am a Russian Hill resident and laughed out loud at your recent article about living in the Marina ("Forgive Me, for I Live in the Marina," Postscript, Jan. 24). I have lived in S.F. for 14 years (near, not in, the Marina) and used to be one of the "drunk preppies" that hung out in the Triangle. I'm glad to say I've grown up, but I still stop in at the Horseshoe Tavern on Chestnut Street from time to time. The Horseshoe is what a current Marina resident would consider a "dive bar" and truly is a refuge for non-Marina types that choose to live in the Marina.

And now, a brief musical interlude: What is Lessley Anderson alluding to with this derogatory innuendo linking the Marina People and the Dave Matthews Band? I am Australian and am relatively new to San Francisco, but I came across the Dave Matthews Band when I was in the States in early 2000 and I rather like them. As it happens, I do not fit the stereotype of a "Dave Matthews Band fan," if it is a frat-loving, cheerleader-type bimbo who lives in the Marina.

I do not live in the Marina, I was never part of a frat in college, I do not own a "cell." In fact, I am the furthest thing from a Marina Person, yet I still like the Dave Matthews Band. In fact, I'm a pretty cool chick. Anyway, since when was a band's reputation graded on the caliber, or lack thereof, of its fans?

In last week's cover story, "Full Court Fathers," SF Weekly misidentified the community center that houses the Midnight Basketball League. It is the Ira Jinkins Recreation Center in East Oakland.
