Cool and savvy,
Works for Me is classic Scofield, if such a term can be applied to a six-string slinger comfortable with everything from funky B-3 organ romps to rock- and R&B-infused swing to mellifluous free-form pieces. As always, the guitarist's open embrace of non-jazz influences gives his tunes a distinctive charm. Though he calls this new recording his "real jazz" project, he performs with a laid-back confidence that seems to say, "You know, I
could be playing anything." This understated sassiness comes across in each lyrical solo, rhythmic exchange, and slightly bent, breezy melody. All of which gives Scofield's straight-ahead jazz a subtle, curvy feel.
