Best Walk

Edgewood Avenue

Edgewood Avenue may be the prettiest street in the city. Paved with red brick and lined with ornamental plum and cherry trees, its blossoms in the spring frame a lovely view of the bay. Park your car somewhere around Stanyan and Haight. Walk south down Stanyan to Carl, take a right on Carl, a left on Willard, a right on Belmont, and then a left on Edgewood. Head to the top of the street. When you've had your fill of the sights Edgewood has to offer, stroll back down the hill and jog to the left on Farnsworth Lane, past a child's hilltop swing that overlooks the city and water beyond. When the street ends one block up, you'll find a narrow dirt path lined with nasturtiums that snakes up and to the left. Follow that, then cut through the parking lot of the UCSF Medical Center to Upper Service Road. Head uphill, over the lushly verdant ravine on your left. When that road dead-ends, take a left on Johnstone Drive and another left on Clarendon Avenue. Just as that starts back down at Crown Terrace (having just turned into Twin Peaks Boulevard) climb the dozen or so steps on your left to the grassy, boulder-strewn top of Tank Hill for an unobstructed view of the whole city, and both the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.
