Urine a Bad Spot Because of Them

Why do our supervisors pass over substance in favor of trivia like the public peeing bill?

Competitors must enjoy the level of physical conditioning required to run a full-bladder marathon. (The event will touch upon numerous well-separated San Francisco landmarks.) Aspiring contestants must also provide SF Weekly with a method of contacting them that provides satisfactory evidence that the contestant does not work for San Francisco law enforcement authorities -- we have no interest in becoming the subject of an undercover pee sting. Sites to be "marked" will be clearly identified, but claims of public urination will be accepted on the honor system. (As anyone who's promoted this type of event knows, pee-verification volunteers are hard to come by.)

With a little effort from each of us, San Francisco will someday be free from its symbolism crutch.

When that day comes, we will let this freedom ring from Grace Alley behind the Department of Mental Health offices at 9th and Howard streets. We'll let freedom ring from the Bush Street stairwell leading down to the Stockton Tunnel. Let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of Buena Vista Park. Let freedom ring from the alleyway behind PlumpJack Wines in Noe Valley. When we let freedom ring from every empty urban nook and every leafy parkway, we will be able to speed up that day when all of San Francisco's children, supervisors and citizens, bureaucrats and mayors will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Pee-Go spiritual, "Pee at last! Pee at last! Thank God Almighty: Pee at last!"
