Why San Francisco is better than Austin, even during the South by Southwest music festival
In S.F., local musicians not only took part in the rallies; they got arrested during them. Thursday found numerous artists hauled away for unlawful assembly, including Blast Rocks!!! guitarist Nick Campbell and KALX DJ Suzy Spastica. Then there's singer/songwriter Sonny Smith, who offered free rein to people who wanted to come up and get something off their chests during a recent Noe Valley Ministry show. Best of all, local activist Harvey (she doesn't use a last name) organized Kissing for Peace, a "bar crawl with a conscience." She gathered a small throng of puckerers at Doctor Bombay's and wove them through various Mission District bars, selling kisses for a buck, with all donations going to Amnesty International and the Human Shield Mission. Now that's the kind of protest I can get behind -- and in front of and to the side of.
