Best Literary Gathering

Held the first Tuesday of every month, "Live Story" is a delightful event that expands on the North Beach tradition of the cafe as literary forum. Sometimes local writers such as John L'heureux discuss their creative process, sometimes a one-act play is staged (we particularly enjoyed Eric Lucas' Waiting for the Slow Dance). The atmosphere is cramped but cozy, so arriving early is a must. The event serves to connect local writers as well as to promote Zoetrope's All Story, the literary magazine founded by Francis Ford Coppola (Editor in Chief Tamara Straus hosts the evenings). It's free to get in, and copies of the mag are spread around liberally to entice subscribers. If that isn't enough, sponsors have included Plymouth Gin, serving up cocktails on the house. After the readings wind down, we recommend ordering a few Picadas or a delicious Schiacciata Niebaum-Coppola (grilled panini with prosciutto and mozzarella). Stimulation for the mind and palate.
