It's not hard to find a terrific burrito or taco in the Mission, but good homemade tamales are considerably scarcer. We love the fat chicken or pork tamales ($1.25 each) regularly available here (the kitchen will cook vegetarian or sweet ones filled with raisins and fresh farmers' cheese on special order). The staff will even microwave them for you and slap them on a paper plate if you can't wait, but we take them home to tart up with sliced avocado, grated sharp cheese, sour cream, snipped green onions, and salsa. It's a feast.
