Holy War on the Peninsula

S.F. Archbishop Levada wants an embattled priest to leave his post at a Belmont parish. The cleric refuses to go.

Levada established the review panel in 2001 as part of a policy initiative adopted by U.S. bishops to restore confidence in the church at a time when press attention to priestly sex abuse was at its zenith. Despite its name, the panel has little autonomy, serving solely as a consultative body at the pleasure of the archbishop.

Editor's note: Maurice Healy, a spokesman for Archbishop Levada, declined to comment for this article, claiming thatSF Weekly has published "junk" in regard to the archbishop, and that the archdiocese responds to the inquiries of legitimate reporters, but theWeekly's Ron Russell does not fit into that category.
