Oakland kisses summer goodbye

SAT 8/30

Summer days are dwindling fast; soon kids will head back to school with fading dreams of long, lazy vacation days. This year, sweeten the denouement with an excursion to "Family Day at Art & Soul." The downtown Oakland street fest features performers including magicians and crooners of whippersnapper-approved songs. Sprouts can also listen to youth-produced poetry at the Oakland Literature Expo, and swing by the Kids Fun Zone for face painting, storytelling, games, and the chance to put their stamp on a communal mural that'll be mounted later on a blank city fence. The free revelry begins at 11 a.m. at the Frank Ogawa Plaza, Broadway & 12th Street, Oakland. Call (510) 444-2489 or visit www.artandsouloakland.com.

Blow Me Down

SAT 8/30

OK, you be air pressure, and I'll play the wind. Kids mimic the elements behind Pacific squalls -- and learn about weather -- at "Become a Storm." The tempest begins at noon at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, 557 McReynolds (at Murray), Sausalito. Admission is free-$7; call 487-4398 or visit www.baykidsmuseum.org.
