Spooky Stroll

City of the Dead

SAT 10/25

It's almost Allhallows Eve, and that means one thing -- the Simpsons Halloween special. But if the kids aren't frightened by cartoon specters, take them to meet real ones at the Día de los Muertos Walk. Families can celebrate the Mexican Day of the Dead with a lantern-lit amble around fog-enshrouded Crissy Field, while rangers recite the mysterious 16th-century legend of La Llorona in Spanish and English. This beautiful and betrayed woman, who drowned herself and her newborn baby, is rumored to kidnap young children from the water's edge.

Don't worry, tykes should be nice and safe as they warm up after the trek with hot chocolate and skull-shaped "bread of the dead." Nonetheless, the eerie nature of the event suggests that kids under age 7 would be better off watching Casper the Friendly Ghost videos at home. The wraiths come out starting at 6 p.m. at the Crissy Field Center, 603 Mason (at Halleck), S.F. Admission is $8, and preregistration is required; call 561-7752 or visit

Roping You In

FRI-SUN 10/24-11/2

California rodeo fans, please report to the Grand National Rodeo. With professional cowboys and cowgirls in fierce competition, the bull riding, calf roping, and barrel racing are exciting, but this event also boasts wine tasting, and if that ain't California, ain't nothin' California. That's not all -- the GNR also features the much-anticipated Royal Canadian Mounted Police Musical Charge. That's right: the Mounties, synchronized, to music. The yee-hawing begins Friday at 8 p.m. at the Cow Palace, Geneva & Santos, S.F. Admission is $10-45; call 404-4111 or visit

Down, Boy!

SUN 10/26

Keep the wallabies and tiger cubs at home -- only dogs are invited to Golden Gate Park's annual Pet Pride Day. This afternoon of activities is primo fun for the tail-waggers, with canine "spa" treatments, vendor booths, auditions for Animal Planet's Pet Star program, an appearance by Bloom County cartoonist Berkeley Breathed, and, of course, the hilarious doggy costume contest. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. at Sharon Meadow, Kezar & John F. Kennedy, S.F. Admission is free; call 554-6364 or visit
