"Aqua Boogie"at the Hush Hush is fast becoming a San Francisco institution: The perfect mix of local yokels, working stiffs, and dancing fools congregates at this festival of cheap beer and good tunes. DJ Vanka spins the best in funk, Latin, hip hop, and soul alongside some of the most funkdafied Bay Area DJs, such as Neta and Ras-Que. Is there any better way to start your weekend than with a head full of cheap PBR and an ass full of beats? This Saturday, London-based DJ/producer Jamie Odell, aka Jimpster, makes a rare San Francisco appearance at "Joypad," a monthly event hosted by Blasthaus. Enthusiasts of electronic jazz, house, and techno will all find something worthwhile in Odell's concoctions. While he'll likely use his DJ set to showcase new and favorite songs from the catalog of his 7-year-old label Freerange Records, as well as bits of his forthcoming Jimpster album, Odell is no genre snob or over-the-top self-promoter: He shies from the spotlight by also recording under another alias, Audiomontage, and by playing keyboards for the low-key live-improvisational electronic band the Bays. Despite strong credentials, Odell never takes himself too seriously, so there's no doubt he has some cheeky party jams planned.
