Football Follies

Hot bowl action at Pac Bell Park

WED 12/31

Bay Area football fans are probably relieved that the regular NFL season is over, especially after watching both local teams start in the basement and descend from there. But there's still great game to be seen at the Diamond Walnut San Francisco Bowl. The post-season matchup features two of the most exciting teams in college football -- Boston College's Eagles and Colorado State's Rams, both of which led their divisions in offense this year (and actually won some games). Regardless of who wins this one, everyone celebrates when the teams' bands lead fans and players on a musical march to see fireworks on the Embarcadero. Watch athletes who know what they're doing starting at 7:30 p.m. at Pacific Bell Park, 24 Willie Mays Plaza (at Third and King streets), S.F. Admission is $47.50-65; call 947-2695 or visit www.sfbowl.com.

Muir Goods

ONGOING 12/31-2/26

Sierra Club founder John Muirwould rather have been strolling amid fragrant, massive California redwoods than scribbling at a desk. Yet in his 66 years the reluctant writer churned out several books, numerous articles and essays, a vast number of advocacy letters, and personal journals. Learn about Muir's life, work, and literary inspirations at "Into the Heart of the Wilderness," an exhibit that looks at the outdoorsman's indoorsy side. The show is up through Feb. 26 at the Wallace Stegner Environmental Center at the Main Library, 100 Larkin (at Grove), S.F. Admission is free; call 557-4277 or visit www.sfpl.org.

Crossed Out
Dirty bikers

FRI-SAT 1/2-3

Movie sequels are usually worse than the originals, but there are exceptions: Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, for example. The sassy script, the Hot Dog on a Stick scene -- everything was great. Its historical importance, though, was its introduction of a new sport to the action genre: motocross. We can't recall seeing action stars revving dirt bikes over mud hill and mud dale while shooting at each other before, but the Charlie'sscenes were so successfully staged we're sure we will again. For the real deal, go to the IFMA Freestyle Motocrossevent. Keep an eye out for hot chicks with goofy grins and firearms, but in case they don't show, organizers promise dirt-filled performances by the stars of the sport. The action starts at 8 p.m. at the Oakland Arena, 7000 Coliseum (at Hegenberger), Oakland. Admission is $5-25; call (510) 569-2121 or visit www.coliseum.com.
