For casual observers, the world of professional wrestling elicits the same voyeuristic rush as rubbernecking at a car accident: It's gory and surreal, and even though you know you should pull your eyes away, you just can't. We won't tell if you sneak off to "No Way Out," the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) extravaganza sure to pack 'em in. Things get started with the standard fare of flying chairs and classic cage matches, but truly bloodthirsty enthusiasts will have a chubby over the main event, which pits the beefy no-neck Brock Lesnar against hesher loose cannon Eddie Guerrero. Fan lore has it that Guerrero's lack of injuries after a horrific 1998 car crash has made the man feel invincible, and his death-defying braggadocio ensures a dramatic brawl. Nosebleed tickets for the event start at only $15, though die-hard attendees might opt for a $200 ringside view (which comes with a collectible chair, no less). The beatings begin at 4:45 p.m. at the Cow Palace, Geneva & Santos, S.F. Call 404-4111 or visit www.cowpalace.com.

Mountain Men

FRI 2/13

Joe Simpson and Simon Yates were feeling pretty cocky that day in 1985 when they'd ascended more than 21,000 treacherous feet to the summit of the Peruvian Andes' Siula Grande. But as they descended Simpson made a miscalculation and fell, badly breaking his leg. Faced with leaving his partner to die, Yates jury-rigged a way to lower Simpson down the mountain. It worked well -- until Simpson tumbled into a crevasse. With no response from his partner, Yates made a horrifying decision: Rather than allow Simpson's weight to pull him off the mountain, he cut the cords that bound them. What happened next makes Touching the Void, the movie version of Simpson's memoir of the same name, such a thrill ride. Gasp and grimace when the film starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Rafael Film Center, 1118 Fourth St. (at A), San Rafael. Admission is $5.50-9; call 454-1222 or visit www.cafilm.org.

Free Military-Style Workouts

SAT ONGOING

Every once in a while, you'll hear someone say, "Yeah, I was thinking of joining the Army, just to see if I could hack it. And to get in, like, totally rad shape. Wouldn't that be cool?" At which point you know you're talking to a stupid person. But the fact remains that said dumb-ass illustrates our collective fascination with abusive exercise. We hope that Michael Giometti's "Free Boot Camp"is more exercise and less abuse, but he didn't choose that name for nothing, maggots. The push-ups begin at 9 a.m. every Saturday in Dolores Park, near the tennis courts at 18th Street and Dolores. Participation is free; call 378-9934.
