There are plenty of places to dance in San Francisco, but if you're a parent looking to get down with the kids, this town can be too hip for its own good. A little hip (or maybe a lot) is a good thing, though, at the "Hula Dance Workshop,"where families can learn to shimmy, bump, and get their groove on the way the Hawaiians have been doing it for centuries. A professional instructor shows you and children age 4 and up how to do the ancient dance, and when your whirling pelvis (or feet) tires out, you can waltz the tykes over to sit in on an olichant circle or make their own lei -- the traditional crown of flowers -- to take home. No one gives you one of those when you go to the DNA Lounge or Ruby Skye.

Children are so used to seeing eggs nestled by the dozen into supermarket styrofoam or scrambled in a pile on a plate that often they don't realize these capsules' true purpose. But at the San Francisco Zoo's "Critter Crack-ups," kids age 3 and up learn the ins and outs of oviparous (egg-laying) creatures -- and that eggs cushion and nourish baby birds, toads, snakes, and other animals as they grow -- through craft-making, dancing, visits with friendly beasts, plus a call upon the Family Farm's chick hatchery, where they can see hens hard at work creating the next generation of zoo fowl. How to ensure an action-packed Sunday: Get free ice cream, show funny movies, and throw in a talent show. "The Kid's Classic Cinema Sunday Matinee & Talent Show" has all that plus a brand-new popcorn machine. The movies are the 1945 short Casper the Friendly Ghost, an episode of The Little Rascals in which the gang (surprise!) puts on a play, and a true classic, Dumbo. After that comes the talent show, and the whole shebang might become a regular event if organizers have their way. The kid-o-rama starts at 4 p.m. (but show up at 3:45 if you want to be in the talent show) at the Hyena Theater, 2390 Mission (at 20th Street), S.F. Admission is $3-5; call 821-3444.
