Ghost Stories: Scams Targeting S.F.'s Cantonese Community Reveal the Terrible Power of Belief
By Albert Samaha
If Mayor Newsom creates a proposal to outsource the city fleet, and bureaucrats resist it, this is what they'll be fighting against.
When I first spoke several years ago with Elizabeth Sullivan and her partner, Gabriel Metcalf, about their dream of creating a car-sharing system, they talked in lofty, enviro-economics terms about weaning people off car ownership, and about the destructive incentives such proprietorship creates. They described an imaginary world in which fewer people were motivated to fight against new homes, stores, offices, schools, or anything else that gets in the way of driving and parking cars. They dreamt of a world where students like my neighbor Tom Hicks didn't threaten to fight their own school's expansion plan.
Here's hoping recent events in Philly, Berkeley, and San Francisco pave the road toward peace.
