Detroit's Carl Craig is known for bringing the "Oh shit!" factor to his DJ sets. More often than not, his surprising (and frequently nostalgic) party choices are slipped into the mix when least expected, causing people to utter profanity-laden superlatives. While Craig's own recordings exhibit a more studious techno air, his energetic and playful side jumps out like it's time for recess when the DJ has some wheels of steel at his disposal. Jesse Saunders, a DJ/producer originally from Chicago (but now based out of a desert town in Southern California) who generally plays at Club Six in San Francisco once a month, released the song "On and On" on vinyl in 1983. He's now rereleasing the track, widely considered to be the first-ever house music recording, as part of a 20th anniversary celebration of, well, himself. Modesty isn't Saunders' strong point -- that would be his DJ'ing. Meanwhile, Roy Davis Jr. plans to release a long-awaited full-length album in the fall on the Ubiquity label, and if the recent single "If You Wanna" featuring Terry Dexter is any indication, it's going to be a return to form for the esteemed Chicago producer. Born in Tacoma, Wash., and residing in Seattle, Donald Glaude is a DJ with a solid national reputation and a godlike status in his own Pacific Northwest, where he's honed his skills behind the decks for nigh 20 years. He's also been a frequent guest to the Bay Area, most regularly for the massive Funky Tekno Tribe events of the late '90s. Glaude's staying power is due in large part to his open musical mind. He's no genre snob and will play it if it's funky, whether breakbeat, house, or techno. In recent months, Glaude has started two record labels (Eden and Jacked) and will eventually release his own production work that is as yet still a secret.
