Many things are known about Sara Jaffe -- her trademark glasses are white-framed and octagonal, and she plays guitar in the amazing no-wave rock band Erase Errata -- but much remains a mystery. How does a rocker write such sweet, quirky folk songs to plink out on her Sears guitar, for example? Even if Heather Gold's one-woman confessional comedy show, I Look Like an Egg But I Identify as a Cookie (which we caught during its successful 2003 run), were sheer crap, we'd probably still want to recommend it, because at each performance's finish Gold presents every audience member with one of the finest, melt-in-your-mouth-iest chocolate chip cookies we've ever had the pleasure of tasting. Luckily, the show's every bit as tasty as the cookie, and a lot less fattening. Gold, long known locally for her sassy stand-up routine, uses baking as a metaphor for her life experiences, telling personal, amusing stories that touch on sexuality, identity politics, employment in the dot-bust era, and the enlightenment she finds in the kitchen. Bring your appetite when the show reopens tonight at 8 (it runs Sundays through July 18) at the Penthouse Theatre in the Hotel Adagio, 550 Geary (at Taylor), S.F. Cutting Through the Fog

Former Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis responded to his band's 1997 breakup by launching the Fog, a punk rock supergroup with a rotating lineup that has, in various iterations, included indie stalwarts Mike Watt (Minutemen), Ron Asheton (Stooges), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine), and Bob Pollard (Guided by Voices). The Fog's current permutation features Widespread Panic's Dave Schools on bass, so expect some jammy noodling at the live show. But the real attraction is Mascis' Neil Young esque croak and sludgy but hook-riddled big-guitar rock. Fans of Pavement, Built to Spill, and, of course, Dinosaur Jr. should watch the Fog roll in at 9 p.m. at Slim's, 333 11th St. (at Folsom), S.F. All Night Radio opens.
