With her fourth solo album, Jacksonville native Shannon Wright cements her reputation as indie rock's goddess of Southern Gothic. On the finger-plucked power ballad "Black Little Stray," Wright draws on Christian mythology to lend weight to her command: "Bring yourself up to the light." The disc's heaviest tune, "With Closed Eyes," lurches forward with feverish lyrics and a fire-and-brimstone rhythmic grind that typifies the artist's religious-cum-carnal mania, which sometimes in concert knocks her flat on her back, where she writhes, thrashing her guitar and howling as if possessed. At once ugly and beautiful, Wright's musicmaking is an extraordinary rapture -- dire, hot, and not without an uncomfortable feeling of imminent ruin -- that lures true believers like moths to the light.
