X-Ecutioners

Revolutions

While the four turntablists in the X-Ecutioners appear God-like onstage behind the wheels of steel -- pawing at breakbeats and twisting tempos into a rhythmic frenzy -- their work as producers has been pedestrian, ranging from the decent-but-simple to the simply horrendous. Their latest, Revolutions, is hardly a masterpiece, but it does offer an improvement over previous efforts. An obvious standout is "Live From the PJs," which features guest MCs Ghostface and the Roots' Black Thought. Later, the guitar-anchored instrumental "Space Invaderz" manages to deftly construct a kitschy sci-fi narrative out of plundered vocal samples. Elsewhere, Rob Zombie pops in to exhume his "More Human Than Human," while George Bush gets cut up on "Don't Believe the Hype." Revolutions not only provides red meat for the turntablist fanatics, but also suggests that the X-Ecutioners are finally making the transition from live performers to composers.
