Múm

Summer Make Good

There seems to be something special in Iceland, perhaps some sort of nutrient in the soil that helps the citizens manipulate electronic instruments like they weren't electronic at all. The country's most popular export, elf goddess Björk, uses this nutrient to turn ones and zeros into fluid rhythms, over which she strews graceful melodies. At its best, the Album Leaf's latest (reviewed above) takes little bites of the Icelandic magic. But, on Summer Make Good, electronic-pop outfit Múm has clearly been weaned on the stuff. The group's whispered vocal delivery melds perfectly with the gurgling beats and plucked strings that stew below. Summer's 12 songs take time to mature and bloom beautifully, but when they do, blips bop, organs swell, and sound collages swish, leaving us stunned, comforted, and hungry for a bite ourselves.
