What Perry Farrell's up to now that Lollapalooza's kaput, and two very different daytime dance options

Pretty, pencil-thin musician and entrepreneur Perry Farrell not only fronted Jane's Addiction, he also founded a little-known annual concert festival called Lollapalooza. He was the '90s, if not the '00s: Lollapalooza was abruptly canceled this year due to poor ticket sales. But hey, at least that's left Farrell with some time to play as his other identity: an orthodox Jew who tours under the Hebrew pseudonym DJ Peretz, conquering the world of electronica. Make no mistake, though -- this is no bit of stunt casting, or some celebrity's vanity project. Peretz has been DJing and touring clubs for years, spinning his select dub, tribal, and reggae-influenced techno beats to the appreciation of fans and newcomers alike. In addition to the legendary musician, local DJ Dimitris Mykonos and Ruby Skye resident DJ Foley are on hand to assist with any ass-shaking. The night starts at 8 on Saturday, Aug. 7. Admission is $20; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com.

For those of you who don't need to smear on a pungent coat of SPF 50 sunblock, or sport a wide-brimmed garden hat to fend off the damaging effects of the summer rays, two very different clubs await you, offering the same amount of frolicking fun and alcohol absorption found in the nighttime -- during the day. El Rio's "Karma," "A Homoerotic Cour de Jeu," boasts not only an afternoon of dancing courtesy of resident DJ delinquents, but a grungy cabaret as well. It features choice local queer and transgender talent, like burlesque team Harlem Shake and Mia More, drag kings the Fly Guys and Butch Magic, rock bands Audrey Come Lately and Chi Chi Palace, plus spoken-word guests and (as gay club rules mandate) go-go dancers performing their bent hearts and minds out on El Rio's spacious outdoor patio.

On the other side of town, down by the waterfront near SBC Park, Kelly's Mission Rock's popular indoor/outdoor house-music series "2nd Sunday" returns. And aside from a couple of really fucking annoying girls smashed on their cocktails of choice (Mojitos!) while making out with each other on the dance floor in an attempt to incite their male counterparts (à la elimiDATE), a queer environment, most surely, you will not find. Happening house beats -- coming from DJs Jenö, Julius Papp, Behrouz, Norman Stradley, Ellen Ferrato, and M3 -- however, you will.

"Karma" comes around from 3 to 8 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 7; call 282-3325 or visit www.elriosf.com. "2nd Sunday" rises early at noon (and goes till 10 p.m.) this Sunday, Aug. 8; call 626-5355 or visit www.kellysmissionrock.com.
