PACIFIC FILM ARCHIVE

2575 Bancroft (at Bowditch), Berkeley, (510) 642-1124, www.bampfa.berkeley.edu. $8, second show $2. The East Bay mecca for film scholars, part of UC Berkeley's Art Museum, thrives at its on-campus location, up the steps on Bancroft between Telegraph Avenue and the Hearst Gym.

WEDNESDAY: An "Exploit-O-Scope" series screens a new print of John Waters' smell-o-visionary Polyester (1981), with audiences sniffing Odorama cards 7:30 p.m.

THURSDAY: A Luchino Visconti series continues with Senso (Italy, 1954; 7 p.m.), a romantic tragedy set during the war of the 1860s, and Bellissima (Italy, 1951; 9:20 p.m.), a tragicomedy set in a film studio.

FRIDAY: Visconti's unauthorized adaptation of James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice, Ossessione (Italy, 1943) is full of Po River Valley atmosphere 7 p.m. Visconti's episode, The Witch Burned Alive (Italy, 1967), from a compilation film, The Witches, plus his portrait of Anna Magnani from a 1953 film 9:35 p.m.

SATURDAY: Visconti's masterpiece The Leopard (Italy, 1963), restored to its 188-minute grandeur in a new print 7 p.m.

SUNDAY: The Witch Burned Alive and Anna Magnani 5:30 p.m. Ossessione 7 p.m.

TUESDAY: Pre-Columbian art is forged in Ruins (Jesse Lerner, 1999), depicted as yet another form of revenge by the heirs of Montezuma 7:30 p.m.
