Famous for their progressive sounds, the good folks at Rx offer up a charming little happy hour on Fridays that combines art and music, atmosphere and aperitifs. Simple and neat, they throw down minimal house, dub, and electro beats to effortlessly ease you into the weekend. What was once a lavish lounge and restaurant, inaccessible to those in a low tax bracket, has now reinvented itself as a slightly less lavish, and thus much more welcoming, lounge and restaurant. Why? Because Levende Lounge (aka the Living Room Lounge) is co-owned by DJ Ben Doren, whose melodic mixing know-how has helped tame it into a choice, cozy spot to catch some of the city’s finest DJs. On Friday night Levende gives us “Thump Radio Residents Live,” whose progressive- and house-heavy roster — which includes Mike Giannini, Kepi & Kat, Scott Quick, Masonic, Sunil Kapadia, Torque, Sinukus, Andrew Phelan, Brett Starr, Didje Kelli, and, finally, Dimitris Mykonos — shows off some of the collective’s stellar talent. Although I am loath to recommend anywhere other than the KFC/Taco Bell hybrid on Duboce and Guerrero to tame your south-of-the-border hunger pangs, might I suggest “Taco Tuesdays,” the healthier and more socially pleasing alternative? Not just your typical happy hour featuring dry broccoli and cauliflower heads orbiting a bowl of dip to soak up your poison, the club serves up tacos to its very beautiful, very hungry crowd each Tuesday. In addition to the food and $2 beers and cocktails, promoters SF Vibe gather some of their finest local talent to listen to while you eat your meat. DJs Todd Michael, Natty D., Uncle Larry, Chad Mitchell, Cindy, and Tal M. Klein spin some lovely house and downtempo beats at one of SOMA’s loveliest settings.
