In our opinion, nothing spoils a pretty picnic like boring families satiating themselves with the contents of cute little picnic baskets, which is why we're thrilled that the third annual Noiserock Picnicwill be bringing what the organizers call "bombastic and unique noiserock' bands under generator power" to Potrero del Sol Park this year (the previous two picnics were held at Toxic Beach in Dogpatch). Conan Neutron of the festival's headliner, Replicator, says via e-mail, "People should expect a fun day in the sun, with BBQ (BYOF) and good loud rock music, as a celebration of the wealth of talent that we have here in the Bay Area and in our community." Sweet. Moggs, Greenlight the Bombers, El Buzzard, Stay Gold Pony Boy, and Me Infecto join Replicator for the event. Having sidestepped the rise (and fall?) of New York City's rock revival, through mostly weirdness alone, Brooklyn bands Animal Collective and Black Dice look as if they may outlast their trend-setting peers. Clearly AC never intended to compete with those garage kids anyway, instead being content to string together acoustic guitars, hand percussion, and ghostly vocals in noisy, messy arrangements. The Collective's latest, Sung Tongs, sounds like a collaboration between the Beatles, Sonic Youth, and a vacuum cleaner. Even less pop-friendly, the members of Black Dice dig themselves deeper and deeper into binary-buzzing territory with each release. This year's Creature Comforts offers listeners a jungle full of robot insects and mechanical animals procreating and preying on lost human wanderers.
