Is there still room in the world for wailing trombones, sultry chanteuses, and trumpet sections so hot they make you want to jump and holler? Though the big-band era passed with the end of World War II, there are still those who love the sound of an ensemble in full swing. If you're one of them, make sure you're in the crowd at the "Fillmore Jazz District Big Band Duel & BBQ Cook-Off," an afternoon of barbecue tasting and swing, jazz, and Latin music from acts like the Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra and Quimbombo, placed side by side on two stages to compete for dancers' attention. Look, you need to walk the dog anyway, right? Every day, rain or shine. So since you're going out anyhow, why not do it for a good cause at the Doggone Fun Run? Collect some pledges, take the pooch on a hike, and -- presto! -- you just helped Pets Are Wonderful Support and the SPCA, two notoriously dog-friendly groups. The run, walk, and other Doggone activities start at 9 a.m. in Golden Gate Park's Lindley Meadow, JFK & 30th Avenue, S.F. Play Naked
Get bare for harmony

Some folks advocate for world peace at protest rallies, some send letters to their representatives, and some vote. And then there are the iconoclasts who call for world harmony by stripping buck naked on the beach. OK, so the connection between nude sunbathing and pacifism is a bit tenuous. But if you don't tell that to the organizers of Nude Peace Day, you'll get to see some activists' goodies. Every year the members of the nonsexist/-racist/-ageist/-sizeist group Senior Unlimited Nudes meet to drop trou and campaign for tranquility. It hasn't worked yet, but hey, why not let your bits dangle free and make the effort anyway? Get au naturel at 2 p.m. in the clothing-optional zone at the north end of Baker Beach (look for the black and blue leather Pride flag), Bowley & Gibson, S.F.
