SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY

Coppola Theater, Fine Arts Building, Room 101, 1600 Holloway (at 19th Avenue), 338-1629.

FRIDAY (Dec. 10): The "2004 MFA Cinema Thesis Show" from SFSU graduate cinema students. Free 7 p.m.

STANFORD

221 University (at Emerson), Palo Alto, (650) 324-3700, www.stanfordtheatre.org. $6. This handsomely restored neighborhood palace usually (but not always) screens pre-1960 Hollywood fare in the best available prints, with excellent projection. The Stanford continues a mostly Marlon Brando series, mingled with musicals.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: The last two, rather underrated Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals -- the oddball screwball comedy Carefree (Mark Sandrich, 1938; 7:30 p.m.), and the musical biopic The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (H.C. Potter, 1939; 5:45, 9:05 p.m.), featuring Walter Brennan (not dancing).

FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY: Marlon Brando enunciates clearly as Marc Antony in the all-star Julius Caesar (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1953; 7:30 p.m.; also Sat & Sun 3:20 p.m.) and does what he can as Napoleon in Desiree (Henry Koster, 1954; 5:30, 9:40 p.m.).

MONDAY & TUESDAY: Closed.

VICTORIA THEATRE

2961 16th St. (at Mission), 863-7576. This venerable old house frequently rents itself out for special screenings.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY: The 2004 edition of Spike & Mike's Sick and Twisted Festival of Animation screens every weekend through Dec. 25. $9 7:30, 9:30 p.m., midnight.

YERBA BUENA CENTER FOR THE ARTS

701 Mission (at Third Street, in Yerba Buena Gardens), 978-2787, www.YerbaBuenaArts.org. $7 save as noted. This venue's Screening Room is a home for film and video programs of all sorts.

THURSDAY (Dec. 9): The S.F. Cinematheque suggests you "Shoot Yourself" in a program of films by and starring artists, including Sharon Hayes' re-enactment of Patricia Hearst's letter to her parents Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA) Screed #16, plus Joe Gibbons' Barbie's Audition and Dara Greenwald's Bouncing in the Corner #36DDD 7:30 p.m.

FRIDAY (Dec. 10): A man puts a deadly curse on his wife, which she can only cure by having sex -- only then her partner will die. A series of the video films of Nigeria's Tunde Kelani continues with Thunderbolt (2000). $8 7:30 p.m.
