Sometimes the Moore Brothers' music sounds too precious. Yeah, it's nice having our very own version of Simon & Garfunkel, but occasionally the local duo's acoustic melodies feel a bit too brittle, their lyrics too intentionally whimsical. On the other hand, Melody Memory -- a six-song EP by Sandycoates, Greg Moore's side project -- is a near-perfect confluence of folkie charm and indietronic mystery. Recorded in the Oakland home studio of Antenna Farm co-owner Velvet Mornings (ex-Cars Get Crushed), the disc feels incredibly intimate, as if it'd been produced late at night under candlelight. Here, Moore envelopes his lovely, yearning vocals in warm synthesizers, fuzzy guitars, and lolling beats -- approximating what Bread might've sounded like if recorded by My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields. Moore's lyrics are as poetically prickly as ever -- check "I wanna kiss you just like yesterday/ Everything else just flies away" from the title tune -- but now they're buoyed by lush, evocative music. This is one Melody Memory that should stand the test of time.
